Birthday Treat of Precious Memories

Grandchildren Photos as a birthday treat of precious memories that any grandparent would treasure. Esther and Liz were struggling to think of something to get their mum Janet for her 70th birthday. I’m sure many siblings have this quandary because when parents get to a certain age they generally have all the material things they need!

Then, as Esther and Liz turned their thoughts to their children, they had a light bulb moment! They had just returned from Creative Cone in Stourbridge where they made a beautiful glass photo frame for their grandma. Esther and Liz talked to their children and they all agreed that it would be wonderful to have a professional photographer take a photo of them for the frame. Janet adores her grandchildren and it would be a special gift that she could treasure.

The photo shoot took place in Haden Hill Park in the West Midlands, close to where Janet and her husband John live and where they took Esther and Liz when they were young.

Fun and Patience in equal amounts
I approached this shoot from a perspective of treating the children with the same respect you give to adults, having fun and getting down to their level. I feel that this works better than focusing on getting the best photos because the second is a product of the first. Common sense suggests that when children are happy and relaxed they will give you their best and this was certainly the case in this photo shoot.

Similarly, patience is a key skill I learnt early on when photographing youngsters. Thankfully the grandchildren weren’t as shy initially like the many other youngsters that I’ve worked with are at first. Whilst a luxury for any photographer, regardless, it was important to be patient and I just hung out with them for a while at first. We played a few games together such as hide and seek, kicking and throwing leaves around and the magic just happened. I started with some larking around shots and messing around amongst the trees before asking them to get altogether which they did without any cajoling. It was a fabulous and fun photoshoot which produced a fantastic collection of grandchildren photos for Esther and Liz to choose from for their framed photograph.  Enjoy some of the highlights xx

Grandma Janet was overwhelmed with the results and said, “I was thrilled when Esther and Liz gave me the photo frame which the grandchildren had painted with the beautiful photo you had taken. I can’t thank you enough, especially being taken in Haden Hill Park.  You are certainly a talented photographer.  Thank you so much for taking the time.”
